FEMA Training Oportunities
FEMA sponsors an independent study program, most of which is web-based. They have courses that provide training in most of the areas for which FEMA is responsible.
FEMA utilizes the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) to provide this training. Most of the training is free or government funded, and most of the courses offer CEU’s and college credits.
To access this training, one can start at the FEMA website (www.fema.gov) and follow the EMI link under Training. The direct link to the FEMA Independent Study Program is http://training.fema.gov/IS/ .
A complete course list can be found at http://training.fema.gov/IS/crslist.asp . The following courses might appeal to most of our members:
· IS-22 Are You Ready? An In-depth Guide to Citizen Preparedness
· IS-100.a Introduction to Incident Command System
· IS-200.a ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
· IS-317 Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams Note: this course can now be found at http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/training_mat.shtm
· IS-700.a NIMS An Introduction
· IS-800.B National Response Framework, An Introduction
Our officers might find the Professional Development Series (PDS) valuable. It includes seven courses covering skills useful to those in emergency management. More information regarding the PDS can be found at http://training.fema.gov/IS/searchIS.asp?keywords=PDS .
A lengthy list of frequently asked questions and their answers can be found at http://training.fema.gov/IS/isfaq.asp .
I hope that will inspire our membership.
